Start with Talent, Work with Strength

Your talents are your natural ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. When you don’t know what they are, it drives you and everyone around you crazy. Now imagine a whole room of that.

It’s what many teams put themselves through every day. We assume we’re paid to get the work done, and that how we’re naturally wired doesn’t matter. It does, more than almost anything else.

Great teams start with talent. Then they claim what they’re best at, and invest in developing it. That’s how talent becomes strength.

A strengths-based team is often the best-performing, most locked-in and most enjoyable team you’ll ever work in. That’s what I want for you.

Thanks Eugene for the eye opening sharing. Having someone experienced interpret/relate the results is a world of difference from trying to figure it out myself lol.

About

Hi, I'm Eugene.

My Strengths journey started because I struggled to work with people. These were people I genuinely liked as friends, people with good hearts who wanted to contribute to something bigger than themselves. Yet, there was a recurring pattern: whenever we started working together on something more seriously, things would eventually fall apart.

Maybe I was the problem.

Read the rest of my story

After attending a StrengthsFinder evening workshop, I went down the rabbit hole of Gallup’s fantastic YouTube series, Theme Thursday. And then, I GOT IT.

I began seeing people and situations through a lens I could understand. I learnt to recognise different quirks, make sense of people’s behaviours and, more importantly, manage how I responded to them. I became a much easier person to work and live with.

That’s the difference I hope to make for you, too.

I grew up in Singapore and have worked across non-profits, social enterprises, tech start-ups, SMEs and global, cross-cultural organisations, in teams that span generations and cultures. I’ve seen firsthand how much the flavour of a team can influence its output, performance, employee engagement and retention. The right mix of people, working in ways that bring out their best, can make all the difference.

I’m currently a tech founder as well, so I understand tech teams better than most.

If you’re here, perhaps there’s still untapped potential waiting to be unlocked. Let’s see if we can start on that, when your strengths are aptly applied.

Coaching formats

One framework, three ways to work together.

Over 10 years I've coached individuals, small groups and whole organisations. Most engagements combine formats.

Workshops

For departments, offsites and company events

Interactive sessions that scale from a dozen to a few hundred, designed to be energetic and immediately useful, not a lecture.

  • Dynamic, hands-on format
  • Tailored examples for your function and industry
  • Take-home material so it sticks

Team & Small-Group Programs

For intact teams and peer cohorts

A series of sessions where the team builds a shared language for how they work, decide, disagree and hand off work.

  • Team strengths map in your own team's vocabulary
  • Working agreements for meetings, feedback and conflict
  • Time to practise on live work, not hypotheticals

1:1 Strengths Coaching

For new and growing leaders

Decode your CliftonStrengths results and apply them to the decisions in front of you: your team, your boss, your next role.

  • Detailed debrief of your talents and how they work together
  • Practical plan tied to your real projects
  • Follow-up to check what's working

What a team workshop produces

A team strengths grid, in your team's own roles.

Everyone's top five themes, mapped by domain, so the team can see where it is deep, where it is thin, and who to ask. This is a fictional sample.

How we read it: only two of six lead with Influencing, so who carries the team's story to stakeholders, and is that fair on them? In a session we turn that into a working agreement.

Built for the teams you actually lead

Your team is a mix. That's the brief.

You may be leading people older and younger than you, from several countries, while answering to a boss who expects something different from what your team needs. Strengths give everyone a common language, so you don't have to rely on stereotypes.

01

Across generations

Talent isn't an age bracket. When people can say "here's how I do my best work" in their own words, generational assumptions lose their grip, and feedback, autonomy and pace become conversations instead of friction.

02

Across cultures

Directness, hierarchy and silence in meetings read differently depending on where you grew up. A shared strengths vocabulary gives a mixed team a neutral way to ask for what they need and to read each other more generously.

03

Across expectations

You lead up, across and down at the same time. Coaching helps you see your own strengths clearly, then translate between what leadership wants, what peers expect, and what your team needs from you.

Questions leaders ask

Before you reach out.

Is CliftonStrengths the same as StrengthsFinder?

Yes. Gallup's assessment was originally called StrengthsFinder and is now called CliftonStrengths. If you took StrengthsFinder years ago, your results are still a good starting point, and I can work with them or help you retake the current assessment.

Isn't this just another personality test?

No. CliftonStrengths measures talent: the patterns of thinking and behaving that come naturally to you. It isn't a label, it's a starting point. The value comes from the coaching: turning results into specific habits, conversations and decisions at work.

Do you really need to understand our work?

It helps a lot. Strengths only change behaviour when they're connected to real situations. Because I've worked in tech projects, I can talk about sprints, roadmaps and incidents without needing a primer, so session time goes to the insight, not the explanation.

Can it work for a mixed team of different ages and backgrounds?

That's where it often helps most. Strengths give a team a shared, non-judgemental language for how each person works best, which tends to be more useful than assumptions about age, culture or seniority.

What do we need to get started?

A short intro call. From there I'll recommend a format (1:1, team program or workshop) based on your goals and group size. Participants complete the CliftonStrengths assessment before we begin.

Let's talk

Tell me about your team.

A 20-minute intro call, no pressure. We'll talk about what's happening in your team and whether strengths coaching is the right tool.
